The initiation of an action potential is called &#8220;firing.&#8221; An action potential is fired after the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/threshold-potential\/\">threshold potential<\/a> is reached due to stimulation at the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/dendrite\/\">dendrites<\/a>. After reaching threshold potential, rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/14\/depolarization\/\">depolarization<\/a> occurs at the start of the axon. Depolarization here causes depolarization in the adjacent region of the axon in a <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/15\/positive-feedback\/\">positive feedback loop<\/a>. In this way, the depolarization proceeds as a wave down the length of the axon, causing <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/15\/neurotransmitter\/\">neurotransmitter<\/a> to be released at the terminus of the axon. <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/16\/repolarization\/\">Repolarization<\/a> occurs following depolarization and the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/16\/relative-refractory-period\/\">relative refractory period<\/a> in which the cell is <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/16\/hyperpolarization\/\">hyperpolarized<\/a> inhibits\u00a0re-firing of the action potential temporarily.
