For most <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/neuron\/\">neurons<\/a>\u00a0in humans, this lies at -55 mV, so a signal to a <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/resting-membrane-potential\/\">resting<\/a> cell must raise the membrane potential from -70 mV. The signal will have to overcome an even greater potential difference to reach threshold if the cell is <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/16\/hyperpolarization\/\">hyperpolarized<\/a>.
