Without the pump, the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/chemical-potential\/\">gradient<\/a>\u00a0would eventually come to equilibrium since some sodium and potassium will naturally diffuse across the membrane.\u00a0The sodium-potassium pump runs constantly in order to maintain the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/resting-membrane-potential\/\">resting potential<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/neuron\/\">neuron<\/a>.
