The next cell doesn&#8217;t have to be another neuron, but it can be. Following an <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/action-potential\/\">action potential<\/a>\u00a0in the signaling neuron, <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/15\/neurotransmitter\/\">neurotransmitter<\/a>\u00a0molecules are\u00a0released by that neuron into the synaptic cleft.
