These sodium channels in the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/axon\/\">axon<\/a> of a <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/neuron\/\">neuron<\/a> remain closed until the <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/membrane-potential\/\">membrane potential<\/a> rises to -55 mV. Following reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/13\/threshold-potential\/\">threshold potential<\/a>, the sodium channel opens and allows sodium ions to enter the cell. The sodium channel closes again when the region <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/14\/depolarization\/\">depolarizes<\/a> to about +30 mV. The sodium channels become inactivated during <a href=\"https:\/\/eprojects.isucomm.iastate.edu\/314-4-kbcm\/2016\/11\/16\/repolarization\/\">repolarization<\/a>. This means that no stimulus may reopen the channels.
