OATR Announcement

Who doesn’t love the idea of “Trash Island” being wiped off the grid? Well the Ocean Aquatic Trash Relief (OATR) organization has turned that idea into reality. Our mission is to clear all the trash out of the ocean with the use of our newly developed product, CD3. This capsule dissolves trash into an eco-friendly food source for all aquatic animals.

We want to involve everyone is this process so that we cover the most volume possible while allowing everyone to help make a difference. Our investors, Mark Cuban and Leonardo DiCaprio, have lead the way so far by helping with the funding but now it’s time to give the public a chance to contribute. For the next 3 months, 20% of all profits from the following stores will be donated to OATR to help release more capsules.

The business’s are: Target, Walmart, Walgreens, Hobby Lobby, HyVee, and Costco.

Let’s help make our mark on the Earth’s healing process!

Netflix Password Ban

Senator Joyce Mc Joyce, Representative of the Democratic Party, is determined to pass the bill to ban the sharing of Netflix passwords. This illegal file sharing has caused the Recording Industry Association of America to fall from $15 billion to $7 billion within the past 10 years. Senator Joyce focuses specifically on stopping hackers from sharing files in bulk; however, every day households may be affected as well. To get the public on board with this bill, you have to make sure they know that they’re day-to-day lives will most likely not be affected as long as they’re not sharing their passwords with multiple people. If they think sharing with one person will get them in trouble, that’ll make them completely against the bill.

“I doubt the law would be used to ban people in the same household from sharing subscriptions, and that small-scale violations involving a few people would be hard to detect,” said Bill Ramsey, a Nashville lawyer.

This quote helped the audience calm down and realize it’s meant to attack bulk hackers that are causing this industry to lose billions each year. Although it is unlikely that a single household will be questioned, sharing an accounts password to 10 people or more will cause an investigation in the suspicious activity. Personal information is continuing to get hacked and the sharing of these accounts is making it much easier for this to happen. Relating the issue to the audience is the main persuasion technique because it makes them care a lot more. Obviously no one wants to get hacked so if they know this bill is helping them rather than harming them, they’ll be much more persuaded.

Successful Research Session

The Journalism and Communications Research Prep Session was a complete success. The turnout was beyond our expectations and we received major feedback for years to come. Students were able to fully understand what was expected of them as well as preparing them for the conversations to be taken place. Our mission was to successfully prepare students for the potential careers they were going to be offered.

“I’m so happy I attended the Research Prep Session,” said Maggie Lars, Iowa State student. “I just wish we would have been doing these sessions the whole time.”

We received extremely beneficial input about how to make the research session even more helpful. Students pointed out that there should have been a couple more jobs added to the prep list so that there was more of a variety of jobs to prepare for. It also helps them practice for all different types of jobs which will better prepare them for curve balls in the future. We plan on continuing to enhance this session to it’s fullest potential so students are getting as much help as they need. We will also have miniature sessions throughout the semester so that students continue to better their elevator pitches and basic communication between employer and potential employee.

NASA Scientists take on Super Volcanoes

NASA has recently been fixated on the serious threat that’s located directly underneath our feet- super volcanoes. They’ve stated that this is a far larger threat to mankind than asteroids are at this time so they have been researching ways to avoid the super volcanoes from erupting. There are about 20 super volcanoes varying throughout the world and the eruption of one of them could be completely catastrophic, killing millions. NASA’s goal is to prevent these super volcanoes from erupting.

“Keeping these volcanoes from devastating the human food supply and causing the deaths of 99 percent of all of humanity, that seems like a worthwhile thing to debate,” said Dr Brian Wilcox, an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “The primary objective is to gradually defang Yellowstone as a threat to humanity.”

This is all very unlikely to happen in anyone’s lifetime; however, ideas have sprouted as to how NASA can solve this issue. They basically want to be able to use all of this heat under the earth as natural energy so it’d actually be helping humanity while cooling off the molten lava. I believe this is a completely ingenious plan and could be extremely beneficial for society as a whole; however, I think science is no match for Mother Nature and one small mistake could potentially have the ability to set off this super volcano in Yellowstone National Park. It’s a very unsteady ground these NASA scientists are teetering on and I’m unsure if I think it’s really worth it to be poking at a beast that’s causing no current harm. If they find a way to guarantee the super volcano will not erupt due to their experiments, then by all means try out this fantastic new energy source. I don’t think that necessity can be met due to random natural errors that occur in every day life. Mother Nature is unforgiving so if anything were to go wrong, an uncountable amount of affects could trail afterwards leading to inescapable death; that is definitely not something I nor the majority of people are ready to face quite yet.

HURRICANE KATRINA VS. HARVEY’S RESCUE MISSIONS

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating natural disasters the United States had ever seen. One of the things that made it so devastating were the rescue response times not fulfilling the situations needs. Flooding had never happened so abruptly before so the rescuers weren’t knowledgeable on how to react.

“During Hurricane Katrina, as residents of New Orleans were left stranded in the floodwater, thousands of firefighters who had assembled to help rescue people instead spent days wading through paperwork and completing training on federal sexual harassment policies,” stated The New York Times.

So learning from Hurricane Katrina’s mistakes, clearly there was much more preparation for Hurricane Harvey. Most of the paperwork was completed before the Hurricane started so all troops were available for the Hurricane rescues. While they were all available, they were additionally more trained for these rescue situations. During Katrina’s missions, only 40 percent of troops felt confident in their rescue plans. That number soared to 80 percent with Harvey’s missions. Local and federal authorities also learned these training methods so that everyone would be on the same page and no miscommunication could be made.

 Katrina vs. Harvey

Katrina’s rescue teams additionally didn’t want the public helping out with the crisis because they were saying it was a “potential liability.” Seeing how much slower the rescue missions went without more help, the troops realized that the public help is exactly what they needed. The problem that did occur during Harvey, however, was that that the public wasn’t knowledgeable about how the rescue missions were supposed to be handled, so miscommunication did start to occur during this crisis.

Another major issue with Katrina’s rescues was that flooding was so extreme that trucks filled with emergency supplies weren’t able to get to neighborhoods in need, forcing them to wait out until the water level went down. With Harvey, they were capable of placing the emergency supplies before the storm hit so that people were able to have access to them immediately. This helped keep the people feeling safe knowing they had access to food and medical equipment.

There still are many lessons to be learned from these natural disasters, but each one seems to be teaching us new ways to enhance the evacuation techniques.

THE “WE THE PEOPLE” RESPONSE TO HURRICANE HARVEY

Texans are doing everything in their power to help the stranded ones affected by Hurricane Harvey. While 911 calls were blowing up leaving many people in grave danger, Texans were warning everyone to stay off the line unless their life is at extreme risk. They realized that the most beneficial way to get people to safety was to do-it-yourself, a distinct Texan attitude.

“In a storm of Harvey’s sheer monstrousness — hundreds of miles across, lingering for days with bucketing rain that swallowed roads and initially kept rescue aircraft grounded — no government response could ever have been enough,” states The Washington Post.

This is what created a drive for Texans to act. They’ve been setting the bar extremely high, influencing citizens from other states to participate in these rescue missions; however, the job isn’t done yet. The urgency to help is higher than it’s ever been because people have been stranded for days without power. With Hurricane Irma on the rise, Houston needs help in the fastest manner possible. Anyone with rescuing knowledge and/or a boat should be in contact with The American Red Cross so they’re able to set up efficient rescue missions.

A reoccurring problem is that people are aimlessly driving down to Houston without a plan or any knowledge of how to save these people. The American Red Cross has issued a donations area on their website to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This allows the entire United States to help support these people during this time and gets everyone to safety as quickly as possible. Any support is gravely appreciated and put to significant use.
