Today in class we discusses a pretty interesting topic that affects all races, nationalities, and religions, stereotypes. I fount this discussion very interesting and found out some things I had never heard before. For example, one of the stereotypes we talked about in class was that all Indians are drunk. I for one have never heard this stereotype? I have heard of others before but not this one. Our professor says it used to be so popular that if someone saw an Indian drinking a small glass of champagne they automatically confirmed the fact that they are a drunk and so is their entire tribe. I think this stereotype has been shut down and used much less often because I have never heard of it until this class.
However, I have heard of the “all Indians are wealthy casino owners” stereotype. I was first introduced to this stereotype in particular in an adult cartoon, Family Guy. I have also seen many casinos off of the high way in many places that are Indian themed. Also, from this class, I have learned that the amount of Indians who actually make a ton of money from these casinos is very small. Therefore, this stereotype has been a little stretched from the truth. Yes, casinos have helped Indian tribes generate some money and do a little better for themselves, but not many have become millionaires from it.

I also hadn’t heard of the stereotype that all Indians are drunk before taking this class. I don’t feel this is fair to Indians because they can’t just have a drink in public without being called a drunk. That’s not right because anyone else can have a drink and not be called a drunk and there are many drunks that are not Indians. I also saw the Family Guy episode about the Indians becoming rich from casinos. Learning in class that many casinos owners do not make that much money at all, they struggle to keep their doors open. These stereotypes should go away because it hurts the reputation of Indians.
