In Thomas King’s article, You’re Not the Indian I Had In Mind, he writes, “How can something that has never existed – the Indian – have form and power while something that is alive and kicking – Indians – are invisible.”. America has been romanticizing the idea of the Indians that are shown in the movies, shows, and books, rather than those of them that are all around us in the present day and a lot of the world romanticizes the stereotyped Indian characterized and enforced by ignorants. The feathers, the headdress, the straight face, etc. This idea not only stems from movies and tv show, but it also comes from years of uninformed men trying to capture pictures of this “dying race”. Since these photographers believed that the Indians were truly disappearing, in order to give the future generations something to believe, they would pay the Natives to dress up in the traditional clothing, shave their faces, and take pictures with a straight face. These photos have been circulating for more than a century and it has given us a terribly wrong impression of what Indians look like. People have continued to ignore the fact that Indians have evolved just like every other race in the world.
