Joey Ramos Week 2 Blog 1

This past week of learning has really opened my eyes on how bad and mistreated native people really are. Learning about the stereotyping the native people has gone so far and has really destroyed their confidence. Some of the native people cant even go out to bars because everyone will think here we go again another drunk Indian. People really misunderstand the real core values of the native people, people know that they live off the land and praise the land but people think they all wear the headdresses and the headbands and all the stuff you will see in the movies. The native people would were headbands in movies to keep the wigs on. The whole learning of the Native Indians is really a eye opening experience. It really does suck to be a Indian in a way because everything you say will get twisted in the media making them still seem like the crazy barbaric animals who wanted nothing but war on Americans. I feel upset that the native people who were in north America first are treated so badly and are getting their land taken away and getting pushed back into a small pocket of land that is barely theirs.

I also found the information we have been learning about in class very interesting. There have been many stereotypes mentioned in class that I have never heard of before. I think it is very wrong that many people only focus on the bad and usually untrue stereotypes of Indian culture. Like the alcoholism for example, many Indians try to be sober not for the fact that they have an addiction, but so non-native people do not continue to give them the stereotype of being an alcoholic. I think people should be more focused on the important aspects of Indian culture instead of only focusing on the bad things that they want to see. People need to be more open minded. When they are, the stereotypes will stop.

I agree that everything we have been learning is very interesting. It is not fair that the Indians get stereotyped for no reason. They should be able to go to a bar and drink without being called a drunkin Indian. This would make you feel so ashamed about yourself, and would mentally hurt you. I also think learning about all of this that it is a huge eye opener and we should learn about this sooner in life. It’s not fair that we came in a took away their land and stuck them into small areas and tried to just erase the Indians population.

What you are saying Joey is right on the money, everything I thought I knew about indians is mostly false. Just like you I think that the stereotypes have gone way to far just like how some of the native americans cant even go out to bars because everyone will think here we go again another drunk indian. Or that natives wore headdresses or head bands because thats all we saw in movies but really they were just worn in movies to hold the wigs on. I never would have learned that if it wasn’t for this class and the discussions we have.
