Intro to American Indian Studies

Summer 2018

Week 2 Blog 1 Sean Shaw

In the second week of this class I have went more into depth into learning the culture, religion and lifestyle of the Shawnee Tribe. This week I had to do a presentation over this tribe so I personally got to spend some time learning and researching on them. First topic I researched on them was what really went on within the tribe and their lifestyle.. did they really live the way we thought and stereotypes have said they lived for so long, when I did the research the fact was that they never lived in teepee’s as we have thought. The shawnee’s lived in small round dwellings called wikkums or wigwams, also I learned about how they would pass down the cultures and traditions to the younger kids. Storytelling was one of the biggest practices in the Indian tribes especially the Shawnee, Chiefs or leaders of the tribe would sit around with the younger kids and tell/teach them about the stories and history of their past. Another topic that caught my eye was how many treaties the U.S Government have made with the Shawnee but have never followed through or at least made it equal for them as well not just for the Americans.

I agree with what you are saying Sean, after listening to your presentation today I learned alot about how the Shawnee lived and how they they would sit around with the kids and tell them about the stories and history of their past and at the same time they would teach them the stories. In the western world more people learn through school and less learn from there grandparents.
I also liked how you talked about the “treaties” and how when they were signed the only people that benefited from them was the white folks and the natives would never get what they agreed on.

When I was listening to your presentation I was very impressed with the amount of detail you went into about the tribe. I felt like it was a very detailed presentation of a tribe I have never heard of. I also think that it is very important for a tribe to keep the story telling factor in the tribe. It has a bunch of benefits and can easily be passed down multiple generations and almost like keep the tribe alive it doesn’t have many people. It does suck knowing the government didn’t go through with him and they kind of hyped it up and then left it all and did nothing about what was happening to them.
