Intro to American Indian Studies

Tayvonn Kyle Week 2 Blog 2

I’ve learned about a lot in these first couple weeks of class, and this information has allowed me to see a side of the world that I have never seen before. Even with all the information that has been thrown at me, one that really sticks out to me is the assault rates. Knowing that Native American women are sexually assaulted more than any other race is mind blowing yet it feels as if it’s something I should’ve known. Society makes sure that people hear about whatever it is that they want to broadcast. This topic is not one that they really consider publicizing. It seems as if they try to sweep it under the rug like it’s not that important. However, it’s a big problem how we, as Americans, treated Native Americans the way we did in the past and continue to treat them as if they aren’t human being as we are. Everything without a connection to Native Americans basically advertises the idea of demoralizing them. I believe the disrespect is typically hidden from majority of us because the government fears that the movement for better treatment of the Native American people will grow dramatically. This would change mindsets and allow people to get rid of the brainwashing that has been put on them by the government. Also, I feel as if there are others that witness these things but tend to not worry about it, for it doesn’t pertain to them. However, majority of the races can relate to this treatment in some way from all the wrongful things that has been done to different races in the past.
