Week 2 Post 1 – Mike Rose

One thing that I really enjoyed hearing this week was the Ted Talk we heard in class from Dr. Donald Warne. The first thing I enjoyed about this talk was when he asked his uncles what they thought about him going to medical school because no one has ever done that before in his family or the town he grew up in, which was Kyle, South Dakota. To his surprise his uncles encouraged him to do it and go to the best school that he could possibly get into. I thought this was very interesting in the fact that they were so willing in letting him do something that no one in their culture has done before. In most cultures you have your ways and you stick to them for the most part. Another good point he brought up was that health and healing isn’t all about the physical part of it and getting medicine. He believed there were four parts that all connected to each other: mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional. It really makes sense though, all these things are separate in our culture like for spiritual you would go to a church, for mental you would go to a therapist. I agree with him when he says you need all four of these to heal the best.

It is good that Dr. Warne’s uncle encouraged him to go to school and study medicine, for it was a way for him to expand the horizon and education among their tribe members. His journey of going off to get a college education and be a doctor would motivate others in relation to him to go out and do great things as well. This is why his uncle included the part about him wanting Dr. Warne to go to the best school to get the best education. It was even more important that he did so because no one else in their tribe had done it before.
