Intro to American Indian Studies

Summer 2018

Week 6 Post 1 – Mike Rose

The book we read as a class this week was The Marrow Thieves, this is a futuristic fiction novel about our world. To sum it up really quickly, the world pretty much went crazy because of global warming. Cities turned into oceans because a the very intense climate change. During this white people lost the ability to “dream,” something that is very sacred in Native American culture. One thing turned into another and before you knew it “retrievers” would capture Native Americans for their bone marrow, so they could once again have the ability to dream.

I found this whole situation very ironic because they called these places residential schools. Going back to boarding schools and how they tried to “Kill the Indian, and Save the Man.” They did this by isolating them from family, culture, and tradition. The reason this is ironic is because we tried to take away their culture at boarding schools. At these residential schools we tried to steal back the culture that they had left of what we took. I really enjoyed this book and it was nice to dig into a book that was fictional, but at the same time provoked great discussions with the class.

I hope you have a good year, it was nice to have you as a classmate.

I think the sentiment behind “saving the man” just proves how narrow our ancestors had towards who was human. I could drown in guilt, but I’m glad I was able to learn to see the humanity in all of humanity.
