Hurricane Harvey has impacted millions of people in the states of Texas and Louisiana. The most devastated area is the country’s fourth largest city, Houston, Texas. The media has been surrounding the devastated area, but focused on the wrong topic. President Donald Trump is an obvious point of newsworthy reporting, but should not be the focus. There are countless amounts of stories of brave volunteers that are being overshadowed by unnecessary political coverage.
Cable News Network (CNN) and Fox News are also reporting on the people affected by the tragedy in disgusting ways. According to The Blaze, a woman had just gotten to a shelter when a CNN reporter stuck a microphone in her face. The woman retaliated with cursing to fend off the reporter. Reporting on a storm with thousands of lives changed is no easy task. If there is any question of morality when approaching an individual, then the interview should either wait or be given up.
The news media should be focused on overhead shots of the damage the storm has caused. There should be adequate amounts of information presented that could help people in the Houston surrounding area. Stories of heroism and survivors after their initial shock has passed should be shown in full. The news is meant to help inform the population, not give political opinion or become overbearing.
The President of the United State’s job is to attempt to bring people together. The actions of President Trump should be analyzed at a later date. The people of Houston and surrounding communities need the news to help them. Lives are being changed forever every second of each day by Hurricane Harvey. Victims do not care what President Trump is doing at the moment. The news needs to have a bigger heart for the victims and quit pushing personal agendas ahead of the real issues of the storm.
