The events of Hurricane Harvey that national news organizations cover are not beneficial to victims of the storm. The Cable News Network and Fox News has focused on political events rather than reporting potentially life-saving information. Local news stations are put in charge of reporting information, but national news should be following suit

National news networks have money and connections that local news stations do not possess. Focusing on stories that have no impact on helping victims is not beneficial to the public. Local news networks should have more detailed reporting, but that does not mean national news should focus on issues that do not matter. Political, race and other social issues should wait until well after the area is safe. Democratic opinions and Republican opinions should not sway any reporter when reporting on a storm.

The only way to see the difference is by checking CNN, any other major news source, during a time of crisis. A week has gone by and local news is still focused on Hurricane Harvey. KHOU is the local news station for the Houston area. KHOU.com is focused on Hurricane Harvey aftermath even after the storm is gone. The coverage area of KHOU is much smaller than a national news organization, but the area is in need. National news does not have an obligation to any city, but that does not give the right to disobey a moral code.

National news learned quite a bit from Hurricane Harvey. Hurricane Irma’s news coverage has been focused on the storm itself. CNN and Fox News have done a better job informing the public on shelter locations. A simple report could save a person’s life. Helping a victim find supplies could be the difference between life or death. There is no time to waste on issues that can be talked about at a different time.
