Clinique Rebrands to Eliminate Animal Testing

As owned by Estee Lauder, Clinique, a brand known for fragrances and make up, is moving out to secure 100% that no animal testing will be done. The brand has worked with Estee Lauder to ensure that both corporations will benefit in the long run of this, and possibly both one day be animal testing free. Clinique is working towards becoming the most widely known “green” fragrance and makeup company in the nation, and is successfully doing so.

Clinique would like to publicly apologize for any previous confusion on our known statement “Allergy Tested. 100% Fragrance Free.” as we have found that to the unseen eye this can look like a statement of no animal cruelty. The brand would also like to ensure to customers that animal testing was only done when required by law.

We would like to notify customers that with our new changes some of our products will also be changing. As previously stated by PETA our Clinique eye cream will no longer be available. Instead, a new and improved cream will be released January 2018 containing ZERO products that require animal testing by law. Since ingredients of products are changing, so are prices; more quality for a bit more quantity. Average prices for each changing product will be an additional $2. We would like to encourage customers to look at this change as positively green as possible, as we are helping to change the environment one product at a time.

Animal testing has always been done to ensure that consumers would not react negatively to any sort of product offered by a brand. Poisoning and killing has never been something that Clinique or Estee Lauder have taken lightly and this also goes in to affect with why changing up products to ensure no further testing is done is coming on strong and fast.

For more information about product changes, new names of said products, or ingredients please visit us at https://www.clinique.com. You can also reach our marketing manager, Kaylee White at kmwhite@iastate.edu.

Support Local and SAVE

As a senior in college, I can thoroughly attest that getting a cheap meal is the highlight of my week. A local favorite, Fuji, does just that Monday through Saturday from 11-2. Fuji has implemented a lunch special in hopes to attract a younger crowd, get them hooked with a cheap meal, and keep their attention long enough to return to their restaurant.

When speaking to the manager of Fuji, she stated that it is their main goal to attract young people with a special and then keep their attention with their excellent service and great food. She then went on to say that from personal experience and from also looking at what other local restaurants have done, have a special of some sort can do just that. The menu for their special is a little smaller than the normal menu, but the options for $7.99 hibachi are: chicken, vegetable, steak, and shrimp, which from what the manager and chefs told me are the most popular items on the menu to begin with.

In a perfect world, marketing in such a way would work for every local Ames restaurant, but that is not the case. Often times businesses in college towns (The Other Place) don’t last simply because students are there nine months out of the year and then the remainder of the time it is a ghost town. Students broadening their horizons and trying new places, then voicing to community members, family members, and friends what they like about certain places can be just the difference

New Career Fair Preparation Shows for Tremendous Success

Iowa State University students gained a bundle of hands-on experience last week prior to the third annual Networking Workshop Jumpstart Career Fair for journalism and communication majors in the Greenlee School at Iowa State. The event took place in the universities Memorial Union where employers came to meet with prospective students to discuss potential internship and employment options. Prepare for the Fair was a new event this year that helped to better prepare students for networking events such as this with practicing elevator speeches that many students are unaware of even existing,  looking at employers that will be at the fair, planning out a business outfit, and plenty of other exercises that can help raise the rate of success when approaching an employer at the career fair.

This workshop for preparation is something that I believe all colleges should put in to account when getting students ready for the career fair. “As an Iowa State student, I take advantage of every opportunity I can to get my face and name out there so I am known around campus and seen as a hardworking individual,” -Danae Dabney (Journalism ’19).

Other opportunities for Prepare for the Fair can be expected to be implemented for upcoming semesters, including new activities that can come from suggestions from students, faculty, or employers. Suggestions can be taken in the admissions office at Iowa State University, or at kmwhite@iastate.edu.

Senator Joyce Mc Joyce’s Bill Will Add Positive Outlook for All

Although this bill will not be passed in time for Halloween 2017, upcoming years in my eyes will surely benefit if Joyce Mc Joyce’s

new bill passes. There are numerous ways that this bill can benefit Iowa and the communities in the state, and here are a few:

  1. Less Violence:  Studies have shown that creating a safe and positive environment for children during the Halloween season is the best option for persons of all ages.
  2. Learning Experience:  Providing a learning experience for younger children can be difficult, but trick-or-treat night can help. While letting younger children go up to a house by themselves, while standing back and watching from a distance, one is potentially implementing a unique experience for the child to gain independence, information from Everyday Family.
  3. Other Options for Older Kids: One key factor that will come with this bill is the active role Mc Joyce will play in to make sure that there are other activities for these young teenagers to participate in and enjoy the Halloween season as well.

Fruit Roll-Up Announces Clean.Fast.Fun

Looking for a treat a little “out of the ordinary” for Halloween this year? Fruit Roll-Up (link) may just have the product for you. Fruit Roll-Up is launching a new campaign about generating “Clean.Fast.Fun” for this Halloween season.

When looking at the typical candies that are passed out, I saw Snickers, Skittles, and other traditional items. An issue that comes with these popular items is… mess. Although it is fall season, there are still warm hands, cars, and homes that can melt candy bars before getting eaten, causing problems of upset children for losing their candy, and parents who have messy-handed children. Fruit Roll-Up would like to change the game of Halloween treats by incorporating their traditional look of the candy, while changing the packaging and tattoos for a more festive look.

Parents and kids can start picking up their holiday treats Sept. 25, 2017 at their local grocery stores! For more information visit (link of fruit roll up press release).

Protection of Uncontacted Amazon Tribes Decreasing, Attacks Increasing

Members of an uncontacted Amazon tribe are mourning after the sudden killings of members. After revealing a little too much information out in public, mine workers are being accused of performing these acts. A quote from the New York Times states, “The miners, she said, claimed that “they had to kill them or be killed.””

After reading this quote, I have come to question what all we as humans do not know about one another. Some are lucky to be so advanced with different aspects of life, while there are others living so primitively. Questions arise from this in my head of if there is more we as civilians can do to better prepare for situations such as this one, and handle it in a different manner.

Before reading the article from New York Times, I personally didn’t fully comprehend that there are still uncontacted tribes around the world. In my personal opinion, it is a little different for me, as I have never been out of the country for work, but for workers either coming to a different country for business, or even natives of Brazil, there needs to be more of an educational basis if they plan to work anywhere where they could come in to contact with people unknown to them.

Anything that appears out of the ordinary to me, comes as odd, or different. I am lucky enough to adapt well to odd situations. In another article from IFLScience, there is discussion about the different risk factors that a tribe could come in to contact with if indeed they do come upon civilization. So, the question remains, should there be more done through research and traveling in to rainforests to meet and interact with these different tribes? Or can there be a different way to gain the knowledge without bothering these tribes ecosystems?

Hurricanes Are Dying Out, While Pet Needs Increase

Over the past week pets have been abandoned from their families through the hurricane. Although there are ways to allow pets to travel with their families, some do not see it that way. As aftermath sets in, the number of abandoned animals increases, and doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon.

For families who have decided to leave their animals behind, this may be the end of the road. Area shelters have stressed that retrieving an animal from a shelter after they have voluntarily given their pet up is nearly impossible. This also causes problems when thinking of getting another pet down the road.

(photo by The Business Journal) In some cases, the pet may not have been so lucky. Starvation, drowning, along with many other ways are the end of the road for a large number of abandoned animals during the hurricane. In the case of finding a pet afterwards and this being the case, coping can be difficult. Although leaving an animal is a negative way in handling the situation, humans tend to go in to power mode when protecting themselves in a time of crisis.

With this all being said, there are some ways to help other animals. Donating to local shelters and volunteering to help find other abandoned animals can be a great way to give back after this difficult time. It may not be the most ideal for the situation, but trying to make the most out of something is virtually the only way to survive it.

Is Abandoning an Animal During the Hurricanes the ONLY Option?

As the hurricanes settle down in the south, numbers of abandoned pets are rising. Through Harvey and Irma, hundreds of animals have been left at shelters, and in some instances left inside the home to fin for themselves. A big question arising with that is simply “Why?”

When searching for an answer, the most common excuse that pops up are the banning of pets in hotel rooms. Many families are focused on getting out as fast as possible and going to extreme lengths to make that happen. When looking for a place to stay that will keep them safe, the “no pets allowed” rule doesn’t hold them back.

(photo by 911 Foster Pets)     Although this is the reasoning behind a lot of abandoned pets, it is not the only one. Space plays an extreme role when fleeing. Many times a car has to hold essentials for an entire family, and Butch, the family dog, can potentially take up a large amount of that. With this all being said, here are a few things people can do to help their pets through this time:

  1. If the hurricane isn’t safe for you, it isn’t safe for your pet”                                            -Thinking about the right decision to make with what to do with a pet can be hard, but holding your pet to the same circumstances as you, it makes the decision a little easier.
  2.  Find family to stay with                                                                                                                      –Often times people have family in other locations, and finding a home to stay in eliminates the risk of “no pets allowed”.
  3. Plan ahead                                                                                                                    –Procrastination in a situation so detrimental can be the difference of finding that hotel with pets allowed, or even a family member whose home hasn’t filled up already. Use your time wisely!
