Madewell Made Well

Whenever I’m in need for a new pair of jeans, staple sweaters or a good quality leather bag, Madewell is the first company that comes to mind. According to Madewell head designer, Joyce Lee, Madewell is for anyone who appreciates timeless designs that put you at ease.

When you think of Madewell and the amazing, expensive leather products, you don’t think of it being very green or sustainable. The company is famous for their leather handbags that retail for $100-$200. However, the leather industry has caused a lot of controversy and has angered many vegan and anti-cruelty consumers. Because of this, Madewell has partnered with PETA and Faux Leather Inc. to create cruelty free faux leather products without compromising the high quality.

Leather can be made from cows, pigs, goats, and sheep as well as exotic animals such as alligators, ostriches, and kangaroos who are slaughtered for their meat and skin in China, which exports their skins around the world. Because leather is normally not labeled, you never really know where (or whom) it came from. (Source here)

CEO of Madewell, James Brett, announced the new faux leather products launch date which will be Nov. 30.

“Madewell, like our name suggests, focuses on getting the highest quality goods to our consumers at an affordable price. Since 1937 we’ve been building relationships with people to get them looking and feeling their best, no matter their personal style,” said Brett.

Brett stated the new faux leather products will increase in price by 10%, but open a whole new range of consumers who are either vegan or cruelty free, and fit their mission statement of getting people to look and feel their best.

“Our ethical choices may cost 10% more, but they won’t be costing an animals life,” said Brett.

Leather should be chic and glamorous without the cruelty of slaughter houses. Madewell has made that possible come the end of November.
