Summer 2018

Today we watched a video of President Donald Trump at a rally in Montana this past week. He said some very offensive things and I would like to elaborate and express my opinions on those things a little bit more.

One thing Trump said was he called Senator Elizabeth Warren Pocahontas in a derogatory way. Pocahontas has a very romanticized story and the Disney version that most people know is not the actual story. Trump calls Warren this because she claims to be of Native descent and he is making fun of her for it. First of all, it is not at all okay to make fun of someone’s race or heritage. Second of all, white people of power in the United States have mistreated Native Americans for hundreds of years and Native people have been through so much. The last thing Native Americans need is for our current president (it is 2018 after all) to be poking fun at Native Americans.

Another thing Trump said was about the #MeToo movement. The #MeToo movement is a very sensitive subject right now with all of the sexual assault victims coming forward and it is not something to be taken lightly and/or joked about. In my opinion he basically said that he better not throw the DNA testing kit too hard at Senator Warren or it could be considered sexual assault. This is not okay for anyone, let alone for someone with as much power as the president of the United States.

I agree completely that someone with so much power and who is held to such high standards should not be making fun of someone’s heritage and tribal affiliation. That is for her to know and to recognize. For him to be in the position he is in, he should make an example of himself and try to be a real role model for the people of this country. He shouldn’t be making a comedy show out of his speeches and rallies which is exactly what he is doing. Perhaps if he stopped bashing other cultures and making false acusations, and spent more time doing what he was elected to do, he would have more supporters.

It is honestly really sad how poorly Donald Trump represents America and how often he spews such insensitive remarks. The way he joked about the #MeToo movement was so heartless considering the seriousness of the topic and the number of victims of sexual assault. For Trump to turn around and basically call them weak and sensitive is pathetic. On top of that, calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” multiple times even after being told that that name is racist just shows how ignorant Trump really is. Especially when his speeches aren’t scripted, the way he carelessly talks about important topics is disappointing and unfortunate.
