Intro to American Indian Studies

Monday we watched the rest of the film. The film talked more on the religious part of the Native people. Native people are disrespected and are mocked rudely about their religion. The Devils Tower is where a bunch of Native people go to do traditions. That is where the pipe was first given to the native people by White Buffalo Calf Lady. I think it is really cool how they can live off of what their ancestors have told them about the first person to bring the pipe. They fully devote their time and religious practice on this pipe that they were told about from their grandparents. It is fascination how they practice it and leave beautiful prayer clothes that are hung on the trees near the mountains. In the small town that depends on people coming to the peak. These set of local people who are very uneducated on the subject of the Native Americans, they said their prayer clothes look like dirty laundry just laying around their peak. This is so aggravating to listen to these people talk with so much disrespect about something they have done their whole life. They even claim that the Indians came to America and are trying to take their land. It really is funny to see who is educated on their own history.

I agree with your post very much, the people who speak on the Indigenous as if they know actaul facts is very funny but also very irriatating. It made me mad to hear them speak on the prayer clothes and referred to them as dirty laundry and that the Indians are just trying to take land from Americans when the Indians have been there for centuries doing the same tradtitions and practices. I was entertained by how the Indians keep the same beliefs throughout the tribe, and always live by the same culture. The video also said how the tribe wasn’t rich finaical wise but very rich in religion and culture. I loved how the Indians also do there prayers outside and meet in nature instead of meeting in a building.

This film is very ironic because it shows how much people really don’t understand about other cultures simply because they don’t take the effort to try and understand. The people who live around Devils Tower simply don’t realize that the natives were at the historic landmark centuries before them. We see this all the time in the United States with people thinking that they know what is best for the natives even though they are unwilling to learn a single thing about their rich history. No one have the right to tell the natives what is best for them except people who are in that tribe and know the needs of that tribes.
