Intro to American Indian Studies

Summer 2018

Week 3 Post 1 – Mike Rose

One thing I really enjoyed this week was really getting a chance to dig into what boarding schools were all about. I was happy I was given the oppurtunity to present on this interesting subject. We really dug deep into the cruel punishment that happened at these schools. I was also glad Professor McClung showed us the video on how Pratt really shaped these boarding schools. They were very military-like since he was in the army. The before and after pictures of these indians were remarkable, I mean they really just ripped their culture out of them. The after pictures you couldn’t even tell they were Indian, but that was there goal all along. While researching I found this great point of how these boarding schools helped us with Manifest Destiny. As most people know that means it was our “right” to take all the land in the Americas. I just thought it was an intersting take when one of the authors stated that doing this was easier then fighting them. So even if people believe our intentions of these boarding schools were a good thing, I would ask you to rethink it. I really believe they did this as another way to “genocide” the Indians.
