Jake Wright – Week 4 Post 1

At the beginning of the week we talked about the apologized issued to the native people of Australia, Canada and the United States.

The United States, in my opinion, was extremely late to apologize to their indigenous people. The United States also did not publicize their apology enough. To this day, if you search online, it is still very difficult to find the actual announcement. After searching the the Canadian and the Australian apologies, you can see that they are more public and apologetic the the United States. They also released their two years before the United States.

I feel that the United States should build off of their original apology and release another statement and have some sort of celebration put on by Native Americans to honor them. Like I said, the event should be organized by Native Americans.

This will not only help promote tolerance and bring Native Americans into public eye, it will also help the relationship between the native nations and the United States. If the United States can provide a valid apology to these people then we can continue to move forward and grow together. We cannot forget about the past even after acknowledging publicly our mistreatment to the Native populations of America.

I think this would be a great way to rebuild our relations and put us more equal to Australia and Canada.

    Jake,
I wrote about a very similar topic in my blog. At this point, for me, it is really not hard to believe, it’s almost expected. Like I could understand how bad that can sound but it’s true. I mean literally it is never ending. Not only is a apology not enough for how we have treated them but, the one we gave, is not even an apology in my opinion. I like the point you brought up about how if they actually made a good apology it would make it easier for Native Americans and the United States to grow together. I feel like that’s honestly the most important part.
