Summer 2018

Week 5 Post 2 Amanda Thomas

Today in class we watched a short clip from YouTube. We watch a lot of clips and films in and out of class. However, this one in particular was very offensive and distasteful. We watched an unscripted rally speech from our president Trump. During the speech he uses the historical Native American figure, Pocahontas, to refer to a woman who he is rallying against. He compares his opponent to Pocahontas and doubts his opponents origins. He insults Native American culture and women in his speech as he has word vomit and cannot control the filter of everything he says. He tried to bash his opponent and talk bad about her so people will no longer support her, but does he really have to bring in Native American culture into the speech?

Along with offending the Native American community, he also upset many woman and supporters of the #metoo movement. He drew attention and practically mocked this very serious issue and made it out to look like it is something that is overstated. When he said he would throw gently a DNA sample box to his opponent, he contradicted himself. He suggested that throwing something at his opponent, promoting violence was okay as long as it was gentle. It is as if he is deliberately putting on a show.

I completely agree with you Amanda about the disrespectful and stereotypical accusations of Donald Trumps understanding of what Native Americans, which is not a lot based on his address to the public in Montana. I also found it was very dehumanizing to women when Donald Trump made fun of the #metoo movement by making violence like some kind of joke. Although Donald Trump is not the first one to use distasteful words against their competition. I have also noticed it is seen by mostly all politicians. The Politicians spend most of their time pointing the finger in their speeches, rather than illustrating and explaining their policies. I would have more respect for a politician who would spend more time researching and explaining how they would improve our country, rather than one who is bashing their opponent.

Amanda it was very bad for Donald trump to say those things like it would not have any back lash on him. He thinks he untouchable and it might bite him in the ass soon or maybe later. Yes it seems like he makes a joke about the softness of women and that has been a stereotype for hundreds of years and it sucks and I wish it would change so this world would be more equal. He does make it seem like it just a joke about the past of the native americans using a historical figure named Pocahontas. A lot of people only know the romanticized version of her and only a few know about the true version.
