Summer 2018

Week 5 Post 1 – Mike Rose

Many people can perceive Indian Casinos as Native Americans getting rich. In most cases this is not the case, in very few cases this can be true. This is more of a rarity among tribes with casinos. Only forty percent of federally tribes actually own a casino. Of that forty percent, very few of them turn a decent profit. Most of the profits go to things like health care, education, and many other that are necessary and beneficial to the tribe. So the whole norm with people thinking Native Americans have it “good” or they are “rich” should really go away. Also many people believe that they get rich because they don’t get taxed, but this is not the case. In some cases they have to give even more money to the state and federal governments.

For the tribes that do have casinos they can be very beneficial to them. Like how I mentioned before it can help pay for health care and things of that matter. Another pro that it gives tribal members to be employed and have a job. Very few tribes get rich and when they do become very successful it can come with a price. For example, by tribes actually getting rich gives to the typical stereotype. Or with the Seminole tribe their was a lot of arguments about what to do with the money.
